Mica Mountain High School is coming! The Carolina Blue, Silver, and Black Thunderbolts will open in 2020!
A major hurdle was crossed this week as Vail School District was the successful bidder for the 80 acre site for the school at the State Land Auction.
It was a bit risky to completely design a school while simultaneously going through the lengthy process of acquiring the site (from the State Land Department) chosen by the planning committee, but it was necessary to stay on schedule to have the school open when needed — summer of 2020.
The selected site is near the intersection of Houghton and Valencia, directly east of the Desert Willow neighborhood (behind Ace Hardware) and across the street from the model airplane airport.
Construction is scheduled to begin around June 10, 2019.
The entire $6.5 million dollar cost for the site is being paid by the State. The State is also providing $22 million toward construction costs. The balance of the construction costs will be paid from the bonds approved by voters last fall.
THANK YOU AGAIN VAIL TAXPAYERS. WITHOUT YOUR SUPPORT, THIS GREAT PROJECT TO RELIEVE CROWDING AT OUR HIGH SCHOOLS WOULD NOT BE GOING FORWARD.
Below is the site plan for the school. The Desert Willow neighborhood is above the site, and Valencia Road is on the right. The second phase buildings are shown in outline.
Mica Mountain will include a much-needed expansion for the Vail Inclusive Preschool Program.
